Issues
  • Improved Parking
We have a parking problem at our library.  At the Main we have a parking lot in poor condition and limited street parking.  I have been diligently at work to find a resolution to these problems.  I am committed to a revised, safer, and efficient parking lot at the Main.

  • Saturday Hours
It is important for the library to be open when people can get there.  This means re-opening Endicott on Saturdays.  The branch supports most of the precincts, is safe to walk to, has plenty of parking, wireless internet, and a specialized collection for that area of town.  It is also important for the Main to be open on Saturdays too.  It has more reference materials suitable to business people and school children.  I strongly support re-opening Endicott on Saturdays.

  • More Staff & Staff Development
The library does not have enough staff to properly operate in meeting the needs of the community.  To have both buildings open on Saturdays, staff our hours, and support library programs we need additional staff.  To have a strong library we also need to have a highly trained staff.  This means encouraging and supporting staff to continue their education with tuition reimbursement from the Trustees.  I am strongly in favor of increasing our staffing levels by adding an Assistant Director and other  necessary professional/para-professional positions.

  • Helping the Friends Grow
A vibrant and active Friends group is vital to the success of any public library.  Our Friends have been integral in providing Museum Passes and sponsoring childrens' events.  Through these efforts and new programming the Friends can continue to grow.  I am a member of the Friends and am in favor of helping them help the library.

  • Canvas Bags
Canvas bags are environment friendly, protect the books in bad weather, and patrons carry everything more easily.  They also are a great fundraiser for the Friends.  I am a strong supporter of getting canvas bags as a fundraiser for the Friends because they are durable, environment friendly, and helpful to all patrons.

  • A New Library
We must always look to the future and see what is on the horizon.  Much of the town's infrastructure needs to be updated.  This includes the library.  All around us towns such as Norwood, Westwood, and Needham are building or have built new libraries to serve their communities.  Dedham has a great library that needs to be updated to serve our children and our childrens' children.  A new library does not happen overnight but discussion must start sometime.  Why not start now?  With the town's population exploding and more developments yet to come the library must be upgraded to meet the new growth.  I strongly support the long range planning involved with constructing a new library.
